For a full year, the United States will commemorate the 250th anniversary of its independence (1776–2026) with a renewed numismatic program that includes the temporary redesign of several circulating coins, reflecting the country's founding principles and honoring its history.
Joining the coins already released is the new half-dollar coin issued by the United States Mint on May 26, breaking with the traditional John F. Kennedy design, which has been changed for the first time in over 60 years.
This new issue, under the name "Enduring Liberty", features the Statue of Liberty, the central symbol of the design until 2027, the year in which the historic portrait of John F. Kennedy will return to the half dollar coin.
The classic Kennedy Half Dollar will return in 2027
The Kennedy Half Dollar is a fifty-cent coin issued by the United States since 1964, created to honor assassinated President John F. Kennedy.
This piece quickly became a symbol of national tribute and one of the most recognizable commemorative coins in modern American history.
ENDURING LIBERTY HALF DOLLAR
Obverse
The obverse of the coin features a contemporary and solemn reinterpretation of the Statue of Liberty, a universal symbol of freedom and the enduring nature of American ideals. The design showcases a striking close-up of the statue's face, sculpted with remarkable detail and realism, its unwavering gaze fixed on the future, evoking the continuity of the nation's spirit throughout the ages.
The composition is particularly striking for the expressive power of the portrait, accompanied by the rays of the crown that extend to the edge of the coin. Surrounding the design are the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the dates "1776 ~ 2026," commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States' independence.
Reverse
The reverse depicts Liberty handing her burning torch to a new generation, symbolizing the transmission of the ideals of freedom, knowledge, and hope into the future. The flame reinforces the message of continuity and progress. Surrounding the scene is the famous quote by James Madison: "KNOWLEDGE IS THE ONLY GUARDIAN OF TRUE LIBERTY," along with the inscriptions "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and "HALF DOLLAR."
