On May 20, Portugal unveiled a new collector coin under the motto" Liberdade e Democracia" ("Freedom and Democracy"), created to commemorate the 50th anniversary of November 25, 1975, a key date in Portugal's democratic consolidation.
The commemoration refers to the political-military crisis of November 25, 1975, considered by numerous historians as the episode that marked the end of the so-called Revolutionary Process in Progress (PREC), the period of intense political and social transformation that followed the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974. During those months, Portugal went through strong tensions between different military sectors and political forces, in a context marked by the end of the Estado Novo dictatorship and the redefinition of the Portuguese political system.
On November 25, 1975, several military movements linked to more radical sectors of the revolutionary process took place, but these were neutralized by moderate units of the Armed Forces, including those associated with the so-called "Group of Nine." The resolution of the crisis helped to stabilize the country's political and military situation and marked the end of the most radical phase of the Portuguese revolutionary process.
Since then, November 25th has been interpreted in different ways within Portuguese society. For many political sectors and historians, it represents a decisive moment in the consolidation of a pluralistic parliamentary democracy, while others consider it the end of a period of profound social and political transformations that began after the Carnation Revolution.
With this broadcast, Portugal pays tribute to one of the most significant and debated episodes in contemporary Portuguese history, highlighting its relevance in the construction of the country's current democratic system.
The new currency incorporates various symbolic elements related to freedom and democracy.
10€ COIN
Obverse
The obverse of the coin features a symbolic composition centered on the inscription "25 Novembro", accompanied by the legends "50 anos" and "1975·2025", referring to the fiftieth anniversary of the events of November 25, 1975. Below these inscriptions is the name of Portugal next to a stylized representation of the Portuguese national coat of arms.
One of the most striking visual elements of the design is the silhouette of an olive branch running along the right side of the piece. This traditional symbol of peace, reconciliation, and stability evokes the process of democratic consolidation experienced by Portugal after a period of intense political and military tension.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features a collection of leaves swaying in the wind, creating a composition that conveys movement and renewal. This plant motif symbolizes the freedom won and the democratic evolution of Portugal after the events of 1975.
Alongside this design appears the inscription "Liberdade e Democracia" (Liberty and Democracy), which reinforces the message of the piece. On the right side of the composition is the face value of the coin, and around the upper edge, we see the name of the artist, Carolina Ladeira, the mint mark of the Portuguese Mint, and the year of issue, "2026".
