On May 12 , the Italian Mint issued a new coin dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the founding of ISTAT, the Istituto Nazionale di Statistica, one of Italy's most important public institutions in the field of statistical research and socio-economic analysis.
Founded in 1926, ISTAT was established to centralize and coordinate the country's official statistical production. Since then, the agency has played a vital role in collecting, processing, and disseminating essential data for understanding Italy's demographic, economic, and social evolution. Over the course of a century, its work has built a rigorous and reliable information base that supports public administrations, universities, businesses, researchers, and citizens alike.
The institute's work encompasses numerous strategic areas. Among its most important functions are conducting national censuses of population, housing, industry, and agriculture, as well as compiling statistics related to employment, inflation, economic growth, birth rate, education, health, and the living conditions of the Italian population. These studies allow for a precise analysis of the country's structural transformations and facilitate the planning of public policies based on statistical evidence.
ISTAT also plays a key role within the European statistical system, collaborating closely with Eurostat and other international bodies to ensure that data produced in Italy adheres to common methodological standards and criteria of transparency, comparability, and quality. As a result, Italian statistics are among the main indicators used to assess the economic and social situation at both the national and European levels.
For decades, the institute has documented some of Italy's most significant historical processes, from post-World War II reconstruction to industrialization, demographic transformation, and the changes brought about by globalization and digitalization. Its ability to collect and analyze information has made a significant contribution to understanding Italian reality and interpreting the country's contemporary challenges.
