The Royal Canadian Mint has issued a new Canadian one-dollar coin dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a historic event for Canada, which will co-host the tournament with the United States and Mexico. The coin also commemorates an unprecedented event: it will be the first time a men's FIFA World Cup is co-hosted by three countries.
The coin began circulating on May 14, 2026, and comes in two different versions: a conventional one and a colored one. A total of three million coins have been minted, two million of which are the colored version.
The reverse side, designed by Canadian artist Glen Green, revolves around the official “FIFA26 CAN” mosaic, built around a maple leaf, one of Canada’s great national symbols. In the colored version, small squares in shades of red and orange add dynamism to the design and evoke the unity of millions of fans around football.
On the left is the official emblem of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while on the right is a depiction of a ball in motion. Below it are the names of Toronto and Vancouver, the two Canadian cities that will host matches of the tournament. The entire design is surrounded by the bilingual inscriptions “FIFA WORLD CUP 26” and “COUPE DU MONDE DE LA FIFA 26”.
The obverse features the effigy of King Charles III, created by the artist Steven Rosati. This coin joins the collection of coins issued during the early years of the new reign and is also one of Canada's major recent sports issues.
The coin comes at a time of enormous anticipation for Canadian soccer. Between June 11 and July 19, 2026, Toronto and Vancouver will host a total of 13 World Cup matches, including games for the Canadian men's national team, which will play matches in both host cities.
Beyond its function as circulating currency, this issue seeks to capture the atmosphere surrounding the biggest football event on the planet. The design aims to convey movement, celebration, and collective feeling, transforming a simple dollar coin into a memento of one of the most important sporting events in the country's recent history.
