Costa Rica is putting the finishing touches on one of its most recognizable coin collections of recent years. On May 20, 2026, the seventh and final ₡25 coin in the “Emblematic Sites of Our Provinces” series will begin circulation, this time dedicated to the National Theater, one of the country's great cultural and architectural symbols.
With this new issue, the Central Bank of Costa Rica concludes a collection begun in 2015 that has showcased some of the most iconic locations in Costa Rica's provinces. Throughout the series, natural landscapes, historical monuments, and emblematic buildings have appeared, gradually transforming these small ₡25 coins into a kind of visual tour of the Central American country.
Following the coins dedicated to Manzanillo Beach, the Puntarenas Lighthouse, the Santa Rosa Mansion, the Heredia Fort, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels and the Arenal volcano, now it is the turn of one of the most iconic buildings in San José.
The National Theater holds a very special place in Costa Rica's cultural history. Inaugurated in 1897, this neoclassical building quickly became one of the country's great symbols and a testament to the economic and cultural development Costa Rica experienced at the end of the 19th century. Its construction was closely linked to the boom in the coffee trade, which financed a project that remains one of the most admired buildings in Central America.
For over a century, the National Theatre has hosted theatrical performances, concerts, operas, and institutional events, becoming the country's leading cultural landmark. It was declared a National Monument in 1965, a Meritorious Institution of the Arts in 1998, and a National Symbol of Historical and Architectural Heritage in 2018.
Circulating currency
The version intended for circulation features on its reverse a representation of the National Theater as seen from its main facade. The design seeks to highlight the building's monumentality and some of its most recognizable architectural elements, such as the large triangular pediment, the columns, and the symmetry of its classical facade. Alongside the building appear the inscriptions "Province of San José," "National Theater," and the year of the collection, "2023."
In this circulating variant, the design appears without color application, maintaining a traditional metallic finish intended for everyday use as a means of payment. The Central Bank has indicated that these coins will gradually enter circulation through the national financial system.
The obverse maintains the common design used in this ₡25 series, with the legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica," the face value, and the two raised bars at the bottom, designed to facilitate tactile recognition. The coin also has a smooth edge.
Collectible coin
Along with the circulating coin, a collector's version will also be issued, incorporating colored accents on the reverse. In this variant, the National Theater appears accompanied by warm tones and chromatic details that enhance the visual depth of the building and help highlight certain architectural elements of the stage.
The Central Bank of Costa Rica will issue this collectible coin in two different presentations: one encapsulated and the other presented in a gift box. The mintage will consist of 10,000 encapsulated coins and 7,000 gift box coins.
This piece concludes one of the most visually striking series recently developed by Costa Rica, a collection that has used circulating currency to showcase some of the most representative places in each province of the country.
