Kaunas will be featured on Lithuania's second commemorative €2 coin in 2026. The upcoming issue pays tribute to the Baltic country's second most important city with a design that transforms its skyline into a composition full of architectural and historical references, turning the coin into a small panoramic view of the city.

Located at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers, Kaunas is one of Lithuania's major cultural and historical centers. For centuries it has played a fundamental role in shaping the country's identity, and today it stands out for both its medieval heritage and its modernist architecture, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023. This blend of tradition, spirituality, and modernity is precisely what this new 2-euro coin seeks to reflect.

The design showcases several of the city's most iconic buildings integrated into a single urban panorama. On the left is the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, also known as the Church of Vytautas the Great, one of Kaunas' oldest churches and an inseparable symbol of its historic center. Beside it are the towers of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the historic Perkūnas House, one of Lithuania's finest examples of late Gothic architecture.

At the center of the design stands Kaunas City Hall, one of the city's most recognizable buildings thanks to its elegant white tower, while in the background rises Kaunas Castle, a medieval fortress linked to the historical defense of Lithuanian territory. The coin also incorporates elements of modern Kaunas, such as the Central Post Office and the Basilica of the Resurrection of Christ, a monumental church that has become one of the city's visual icons.

One of the most interesting design details is the organic shape located in the lower left corner of the coin. In contrast to the straight lines of the buildings, this element introduces a more natural and fluid feel, seemingly representing the landscape and rivers surrounding the city, creating a unique visual balance between nature and urbanism.

The coin features the inscriptions “KAUNAS” and “LIETUVA”, the year 2026, the Lithuanian mint mark, and the initials of designer Tomas Dragūnas. The outer ring retains the twelve stars of the European Union, standard on all €2 coins.

The issue will have an estimated mintage of 500,000 coins, of which 495,000 will be for circulation and 5,000 will be issued in BU (Brilliant Uncirculated) quality in a numismatic presentation for collectors. Its release is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026.
