The commemorative coins issued by the National Bank of Ukraine on May 15th constitute a tribute to one of the most tragic cultural generations in the country's history: that of the so-called "Shooted Renaissance".
The broadcast commemorates the Ukrainian artists and intellectuals of the 1920s and 1930s who spearheaded an extraordinary cultural awakening in fields such as literature, theater, film, music, and visual arts, before being brutally persecuted and eliminated by the Stalinist regime.
CURRENCY
Reverse
On the reverse of the coin, against a mirrored background, is a stylized portrait of Maik Yohansen, arranged as if it appeared on the cover of a book from which a page has been torn out bearing the poet and prose writer's name, "MAIK / YOHANSEN." At the bottom of the portrait are the writer's years of life: "1895 / 1937." The composition symbolizes the 1930s, a period when attempts were made to erase the memory of prominent Ukrainians: writers, playwrights, musicians, and painters.
PRESENTATION
Reverse
The reverse of the coin features, against a mirrored background, a stylized portrait of Ivan Padalka, whose figure appears to be encroaching upon the symbol of the then Soviet regime: the hammer and sickle. To the left of the portrait, the artist's name, "IVAN / PADALKA," is inscribed vertically in relief, along with the years he lived: "1894 / 1937."
PRESENTATION
The obverse of both coins features the stylized inscription "SLOVO ," the name of the 1930s Kharkiv writers' residence located in the Shevchenko district. The lettering is textured to resemble wheat shoots, evoking the young generation of artists whose lives and works were cut short by the totalitarian regime. The tragedy of this historical period is underscored by the letter "O" with a bullet hole from which blood flows, conveying the painful wound in Ukraine's history and the dreams of these talented artists. Below the text are the inscription "УКРАЇНА" (UKRAINE), the year of issue "2026," the small state emblem of Ukraine, the face value, and the mint mark of the National Bank of Ukraine.
