Portugal has released a unique numismatic issue dedicated to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a collection of three different coins that share the exact same design. The issue revolves around one of the world's biggest sporting events and, at the same time, reflects a common practice in Portuguese numismatics: offering the same artistic creation in various metals and finishes to appeal to both general and specialized collectors.
The “FIFA World Cup” series, broadcast by the National Press-Money House (INCM), coincides with the World Cup, which will take place between June 11 and July 19, 2026, in Canada, the United States, and Mexico. It will be a historic edition for several reasons: it will be the first jointly hosted by three countries and also the first to feature 48 national teams, making it the largest tournament ever held.
The three pieces share the exact same design, differing only in the metal and finish. Portugal is thus opting for a unique and easily recognizable image, centered on the universal nature of football. The main motif features the FIFA World Cup trophy accompanied by elements alluding to the three host countries and a spectacular bicycle kick, one of the most iconic and visually striking moves in the sport.
The composition is particularly dynamic. The ball and the player's movement seem to envelop the design, while the trophy occupies center stage as a symbol of the world's most prestigious football competition. All of this is accompanied by the relevant legends and the coin's face value, creating a modern and highly visual piece that aims to appeal to both football fans and collectors.
Portugal has issued this collection in three different versions. The most accessible is the €5 coin in cupronickel, intended for general collectors and sold at face value in the country. Alongside it is a proof silver edition, with much more refined finishes and designed for specialized collectors, while the most exclusive version is the proof gold coin, intended for a very limited mintage.
The Bank of Portugal confirmed that the issuance began on May 12, 2026, except for the gold coin which is not yet available, and that the coins can be purchased through financial institutions, official treasuries and authorized distributors.
One of the most interesting aspects of this issue is that all three coins share the exact same design, allowing one to clearly appreciate how the visual perception of the piece changes depending on the metal and finish used. In the silver proof version, for example, the contrasts between mirrored surfaces and matte elements greatly enhance the design's dynamism and the trophy's presence, while also incorporating touches of color that add even more visual depth to the overall design.
Furthermore, this issue is part of Portugal's 2026 numismatic program, one of the most diverse in recent years, encompassing historical, cultural, and sporting themes. Portugal thus continues its commitment to producing contemporary coins with strong visual appeal, capable of connecting with a wide range of audiences.

The collection demonstrates how football remains one of the great international themes capable of transcending borders, even within the world of numismatics. And although Portugal still needs to secure its final qualification for the tournament, the country has already wanted to leave a numismatic record of a World Cup that promises to become one of the biggest, most followed, and most widely covered in recent sporting history.
