The Central Reserve Bank of Peru (BCRP) issued a commemorative silver coin on April 30, 2026, celebrating 200 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Peru and the United States of America, a historical milestone reflecting two centuries of political, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations.
A bicentennial of historical relations
Diplomatic relations between Peru and the United States date back to 1826, a few years after Peruvian independence. Since then, both countries have developed a multifaceted relationship based on cooperation, trade, and cultural exchange.
The United States has historically been one of Peru's main trading partners, especially since the signing of the Free Trade Agreement in 2009. Beyond economics, the relationship has also strengthened in areas such as education, science, security, and migration.
The issuance of this coin not only commemorates a date, but also symbolizes the continuity of a bond that has evolved over two centuries, adapting to geopolitical changes and strengthening bilateral cooperation.
Coin description
The obverse of the coin features the Coat of Arms of Peru, accompanied by the inscription “BANCO CENTRAL DE RESERVA DEL PERÚ” (Central Reserve Bank of Peru). It also includes the year of minting (2026) and the denomination “UN SOL” (One Sol).
This design follows the traditional line of coins issued by the BCRP, highlighting national identity and the issuing authority.
Reverse
The reverse of the coin stands out for its strong symbolic and binational significance. It depicts two emblematic elements:
Machu Picchu, an icon of the Inca legacy and a symbol of the high level of development in engineering, architecture, and astronomy of this civilization.
The Freedom Tower in Miami, associated with the memory of migrants and considered a symbol of hope and freedom.
Below Machu Picchu is the year 1826, while next to the tower is the year 2026, establishing a temporal bridge between the beginning of diplomatic relations and its bicentennial.
At the top is the inscription:
“200 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS”, and at the bottom:
“PERU – USA”.
This design integrates representative elements from both countries, reinforcing the message of historical union and cooperation.
