The Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano, issued on May 21 a hexagonal silver coin with a face value of 3 euros dedicated to the Italian presidency of the G7.
On 1 January 2024, Italy assumed the presidency of the G7 for the seventh time, a group which includes Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union itself, and which plays a crucial role in defending freedom and democracy in the face of various global challenges. The Italian presidency, which will last until 31 December 2024, includes numerous meetings and events across the country, with the highlight being the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Puglia from 13 to 15 June.
Italy's priorities include defending the international system based on the rule of law, which has been shaken by Russian aggression in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East. It will also focus on strengthening relations with developing nations and emerging economies, especially in Africa and the Indo-Pacific region, seeking beneficial and equitable partnerships.
Italy will address migration issues and other challenges such as climate, energy and food security, seeking innovative solutions together with its global partners. In addition, Artificial Intelligence will be a major topic, highlighting the need for governance that guarantees its ethical and human-centred use.
The reverse of the coin features the logo of the Italian G7 Presidency in the centre, the main element of which is the centuries-old olive tree, the identifying symbol of the Mediterranean landscape and, in particular, of the Puglia region which will host the summit of the leading countries. At the top of the arch is the face value “3 EURO”, on the left is the letter “R”, identifying the Mint of Rome, and on the right is the year of issue of the coin “2024”.
In the centre of the obverse we see a representation of the profile of the allegory Italia Turrita with a star, whose crown and pendant represent artificial intelligence, a powerful tool of technological innovation that projects the nation into the future. Around this figure is the inscription «REPUBBLICA ITALIANA», and below, the signature of the coin's author «E. FERRETTI» and the text «VERSO IL FUTURO» (TOWARDS THE FUTURE).
