The Bank of Estonia will issue a commemorative 2 euro coin in 2025, which will be dedicated to the “500th Anniversary of the First Printed Text in Estonian”.

The design of the coin was born from a competition held for the occasion by the Bank of Estonia, which chose the coin submitted by Svetlin Balezdrov, which symbolises Estonian literary tradition, according to the artist.

About the motive of the coin

Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language spoken by around 1.1 million people, the majority of whom live in Estonia. There are also small Estonian-speaking communities in Latvia and Russia.

The earliest surviving Estonian text is the Kullamaa manuscript, dating from 1524-1528. It is a translation of the main Catholic prayers such as the Lord's Prayer and the Creed.

The Coin

The centre of the coin shows four stylised books forming the letter E and the design is surrounded by the words “Eesti kirjakeel 500” and the years 1525 and 2025.

The coin is expected to be issued in the first half of 2025, with an issuance volume to be determined, although looking at the circulations of previous years, this could be 1 million pieces.
