The Hungarian National Bank, Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB), has issued a silver collector coin with a face value of 15,000 forints and a cupro-nickel version with a face value of 3,000 forints, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of the birth of Sára Salkaházi.
Sara Salkahazi
Sára Salkaházi was born as Sarolta Schalkház in Kassa on 11 May 1899. After graduating as a teacher, she followed her ambitions and became a writer, publishing her writings in the Košice Evening Paper under a pseudonym. Social issues were already at the centre of her attention.
In 1929 she joined the Sisters of Social Service, and in the same year became a nun, which strengthened her social sensitivity. As a social worker she served the poor, the marginalised and the oppressed by establishing charitable organisations in Košice and Komárom, working as a teacher, running a children's soup kitchen and a shop selling devotional goods, and supervising a poorhouse. In 1941 she became the national director of the Katholikus Dolgozó Nők és Leányok Szövetsége (Coalition of Catholic Working Women and Girls), edited the movement's newspaper and gave lectures. In addition, she opened homes for the poor and initiated the foundation of a school for working women.
During World War II, she saved nearly 100 Hungarian Jews from persecution. She also shared a common fate with people who had been deported. On December 27, 1944, members of the Arrow Cross Party shot the sister, who shared her fate with other deportees, into the Danube, along with many other prisoners. Sára Salkaházi was honored with the Righteous Among the Nations award by Yad Vashem in 1969, and on September 17, 2006, the Catholic Church recognized her entry into a state of blessedness (beatification), which is a step toward canonization.
On the obverse, on the left, we see a full-figure depiction of Sára Salkaházi based on a photograph from around 1932. She is leaning against an open door, a reference to her accepting attitude towards people in difficult and needy situations. On the right, the year of issue “2024”, the face value in florins, and the mint mark “BP.” are depicted. Below this, next to the inscription “VILÁG IGAZA” (Righteous Among the Nations), a symbolic tree is depicted.
In 1969, Sára Salkaházi was posthumously awarded Yad Vashem's most prestigious award for her heroic actions in saving human beings. This award is given to non-Jewish people, who saved Jews and expected nothing in return, putting their own freedom, safety and lives at risk. The motif of this tree suggests that one is planted in honor of each award winner.
The reverse of the coin shows a representation of a section of the Danube and the Szabadság híd (Liberty Bridge), with a cross marking the spot where Sára Salkaházi was executed on the bank of the Danube in 1944. Inserted into the representation of the Danube, in four lines, is the motto offered by Sára Salkaházi when she took the oath as a nun in 1940: “ECCE EGO, MITTE ME” (Here I am, send me). The upper left edge bears the inscription “BOLDOG SALKAHÁZI SÁRA” as a legend and the years “1899–1944” referring to her birth and death.
