The Central Bank of Malta has issued a new and significant coin that aims to pay tribute to the legacy of the great Marco Polo (1254-1324), on the occasion of the 700th anniversary of his death. Created by Daniela Fusco, this limited edition silver coin has a face value of 10 euros.
Marco Polo, the famous Venetian merchant and explorer, left an indelible mark on history. Born around 1254, he followed in the footsteps of his father and uncle on their travels through Asia, but what really made him go down in history were his writings in “The Travels of Marco Polo.”
These accounts, handwritten by Rustichello of Pisa, described China and the Mongol Empire, thus having a profound impact on European beliefs and behaviour towards the East. Indeed, they even inspired Christopher Columbus in his own voyages. Marco Polo not only traded silk and spices, but also opened the doors of the European imagination to distant lands and exotic cultures.
The reverse of the coin, by Daniela Fusco, shows, on the left, surrounding the composition, the underlined inscription of the coin's motif in English "100th ANNIVERSARY OF THE DEATH OF MARCO POLO", and below it is a Compass Rose. On the right side of the design is a portrait of Marco Polo, and to his left are various buildings to symbolize the different regions and cultures of the world that Marco Polo visited during his lifetime during his travels: St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, a minaret of a Muslim mosque, and an Asian pagoda, respectively. Below the buildings is the face value "10 EURO", and to the right of the portrait, on the edge, is the author's mark "FUSCO".
On the other hand, the obverse of the piece, made by Noel Galea Bason, contains the twelve stars of the European Union surrounding the edge, and in the center is the coat of arms of the Republic of Malta, along with the inscriptions of the name of the issuing country and the date of issue "2024".
