The German federal government has decided to mint a commemorative 2 euro coin under the name “35 Years of German Unity” and issue it in September 2025, as next year will mark the 35th anniversary of German reunification.
On 3 October 1990, the mandate of the Basic Law to the German people to complete the unity and freedom of Germany was fulfilled. The coin also marks the beginning of a series called "Unity, Law and Freedom", in which a 2 euro commemorative coin will be issued annually in honour of politicians who have shaped the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.
The coin features a typographical composition on its national side: on the left side, on a longitudinal axis slightly offset to the left, the inscription “Wir sind ein Volk” (We are one people). On the right side, “35 Jahre Deutsche Einheit” (35 years of German unity). Both blocks are slightly offset along the central axis and are connected at the top and bottom by a horizontal line. The connection is created by a slightly enlarged D in the middle. The compositional shift of the two blocks of letters underlines the fact that there have been East and West Germans united by the D for 35 years. Despite the coin’s seemingly simple composition, it evokes a variety of associations, such as the open wall indicated by the separated lines.
The upper part of the design also features the initials of the artist Thomas Serres from Hattingen ("TS") and the mint mark of the respective mint ("A", "D", "F", "G" or "J"). The year of issue "2025" is printed below, with the code "D" of the issuing country, Germany, above it. The outer ring of the coin shows the twelve stars of the European flag.
The edge of the German 2 euro commemorative coin contains the inscription: "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (UNITY, JUSTICE AND FREEDOM) and a stylised federal eagle.
The minted volume of this coin is 30 million pieces.
