A new 5 euro silver coin was issued on May 31 by the Italian Mint, Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato Italiano, to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the University of Naples "Federico II", one of the oldest academic institutions in the world.
This recent broadcast shows us an evocative perspective view of the historic headquarters of the University of Naples, an institution founded by the Holy Roman Emperor and King of Sicily Frederick II of Swabia and which has borne his name since 1992.
The university is structured around thirteen different faculties, each specializing in different areas of knowledge and research. In order to efficiently manage the large number of members that make up the university community, including professors, technical-administrative staff and students, the university has been organized into three main campuses.
The obverse of the coin presents a perspective view of the historic seat of the University of Naples “Federico II” within a decorative motif inspired by the tympanum of the main façade of the Palace. The university was established on 5 June 1224 by an edict issued by the Swabian Emperor. In an arch, at the top and bottom of the composition, there is the inscription of the issuing country “REPUBBLICA ITALIANA”, and on the right the signature of the designer “U. PERNAZZA”.
While on the reverse, as a central motif, we see the logo of the University of Naples “Federico II” surrounded by a circle with the inscription of the coin’s motif “800 ANNI UNIVERSITÀ FEDERICO II NAPOLI” (800 YEARS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF FEDERICO II OF NAPLES), below, on both sides, we see the dates “1224” and “2024”, which correspond to the year of foundation of the University and the year of issue of the coin. On the right, there is the letter “R”, identifying the Mint of Rome, and at the bottom of the composition, the face value of the coin is indicated “5 EURO”.
