In 2025, the Banque Centrale du Luxembourg (BCL) is launching a unique numismatic project: a collection of six coins dedicated to the celestial bodies of our Solar System. The first issue, entitled SOL , pays tribute to the sun with a high-quality silver coin that combines artistic innovation and very limited production.
This initiative seeks to unite the tradition of the coin with the fascination with the cosmos, creating a visual narrative that will accompany collectors for years to come. With each new issue, other protagonists of our cosmic neighborhood will be discovered, completing a journey that will culminate on the Moon.
Coin design
The obverse features a colorful, artistic representation of the Sun in all its splendor. The warm, vibrant tones convey the star's power, while the graphic details evoke the flows of energy and radiation that characterize it. The inscription "SUN" stands out at the top, and the face value "25 EURO" appears in the center . The background incorporates geometric patterns that suggest dynamism and continuous movement, reinforcing the idea of the Sun as the driving force of life and the planetary system.
The reverse is dedicated to Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg , whose portrait is depicted in a modern geometric style. To the left of the bust is the vertical inscription “LËTZEBUERG 2025” , arranged in two lines.

A series inspired by the cosmos
The SOL coin is the beginning of a journey that will take collectors to various bodies in the Solar System. Although the exact themes of the next five coins have not yet been revealed, the BCL has announced that they will include planets, satellites, and, most notably, the Moon. The complete series, conceived in six stages, will allow for the construction of a cosmic mosaic unique in European numismatics.
Furthermore, the project is not limited to the visual aspect: it also seeks to spark scientific and cultural curiosity about our place in the universe. The union of art, astronomy, and monetary tradition makes this collection an object of interest to numismatists and astronomy enthusiasts alike.
Presentation and collecting
Each copy is presented in a protective capsule to ensure its long-term preservation. The piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and is delivered with a folder designed to hold all six issues in the series. This folder not only protects the piece but also provides a visual overview that will be completed with each new release.
The limited mintage of just 1,000 coins gives each coin added value from the moment it is issued. This is a release aimed at a discerning audience who appreciates both technical quality and exclusivity.
