If all goes as planned, the two commemorative 2-euro coins that Greece has planned for 2025 will be issued and put into circulation next Wednesday, September 10th. One is dedicated to the "Centenary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis," a Greek composer known for both his music and his political activism. The other is for the "200th anniversary of the death of Laskarina Bouboulina," a heroine of Greek independence.
2 euro coin – Centenary of the birth of Mikis Theodorakis
Mikis Theodorakis (1925–2021) was a Greek composer, known for both his music and his political activism. He is most famous for composing the music for Zorba the Greek (1964), whose dance "Sirtaki" became a cultural icon. Throughout his career, he combined influences from Greek popular music with classical music, and also wrote symphonies, operas, and folk songs.
In addition to his artistic career, Theodorakis was a committed activist, participating in the Greek resistance during World War II and later in the fight against the military dictatorship in Greece (1967–1974). He was imprisoned and exiled for his political views, but remained a key figure in his country's cultural and political life until his death.
At the center of the design is a profile portrait of Mikis Theodorakis conducting as a conductor, striking a distinctive pose. To the left are a treble clef and musical staff, highlighting his contribution to music. Surrounding the design, in Greek, is the inscription “100 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΗ ΓΕΝΝΗΣΗ ΤΟΥ ΜΙΚΗ ΘΕΟΔΩΡΑΚΗ” (100 years since the birth of Mikis Theodorakis). Below is the year 2025, along with the inscription “ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ” (Hellenic Republic).

2 euro coin – 200th anniversary of the death of Laskarina Bouboulina
Laskarina Bouboulina (1771-1825) was a prominent heroine of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. She was born on the Spetses Islands and, after being orphaned, moved to Russia, where her family joined the Russian navy. Bouboulina inherited the fortune of her husband, a Greek merchant, which allowed her to finance and command her own ships.
During the War of Independence (1821-1829), she fought valiantly, becoming one of the few female leaders in the struggle against the Ottoman Empire. She was known for her skill as a naval strategist and for her courage, being one of the first to offer resources and command troops. Her death in 1825 was a significant blow to the independence movement.
The obverse of the coin features a depiction of Laskarina Bouboulina, a key heroine of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire. Bouboulina is depicted in an imposing and determined manner, with her hand extended forward, symbolizing her courage and leadership in the struggle. Her bust reflects her serious and determined face, wearing a headscarf, which was typical of the era. The background includes visual elements related to independence, such as an ancient war tower, referencing the fortresses and ships on which she fought.
Along the top edge of the coin appears the text: “200 ΧΡΟΝΙΑ ΑΠΟ ΤΟ ΘΑΝΑΤΟ ΤΗΣ ΛΑΣΚΑΡΙΝΑΣ ΜΠΟΥΜΠΟΥΛΙΝΑΣ”, which translates as "200 years since the death of Laskarina Bouboulina." At the bottom, below the figure of the heroine, there is the mention of "ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΗ ΔΗΜΟΚΡΑΤΙΑ" (Hellenic Republic), along with the date "2025".
