The Bank of Ukraine has just issued a new commemorative coin commemorating the 150th anniversary of the birth of Oleksandr Koshyts, a Ukrainian choirmaster, composer, ethnographer and professor (1875-1944), who played a key role in popularizing Ukrainian musical culture internationally.
The commemorative coin honors the creative legacy of the artist, who, at the invitation of the Director of the UNR Directorate, Symon Petliura, directed the Ukrainian Republican Chapel. Between 1919 and 1924, under the direction of Oleksandr Koshyts, the chapel toured 17 countries, giving over 600 concerts. It was then that the world first heard Mykola Leontovych's "Shchedryk," a work that would later become the world-famous Christmas hit "Carol of the Bells."
On the reverse of the coin, in the center of the composition, a stylized portrait of Oleksandr Koshits in a tailcoat is depicted. Particular attention is paid to the depiction of the artist's hands, the conductor's primary instrument and means of emotional expression. The background is a dynamic, wavy surface that separates itself from the coat of arms of the Ukrainian People's Republic, symbolizing the spread of Ukrainian culture throughout the world thanks to the band's tours. On the left, against a mirrored background, appear the inscriptions: OLEKSANDR / KOSHITS and the years of his life (1875 / 1944).
