Today, September 25, 2025, Germany has issued 30 million 2-euro coins to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the country's reunification. This is not just a commemorative issue: this coin also marks the start of a new series entitled "Unity, Law, and Freedom," which will pay tribute, year after year, to politicians who have left a decisive mark on the history of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The next chapter in this series has already been announced: in 2026, the coin will be dedicated to Konrad Adenauer, the first Federal Chancellor, a key figure in the reconstruction of the country after the Second World War and in Germany's integration into the Western European community.

A design full of symbolism

The coin presented today is striking for its simplicity and, at the same time, the strength of its design. On its national side, a typographic composition combines two messages:

On the left side, the inscription "Wir sind ein Volk" (We are one people).

On the right side, "35 Jahre Deutsche Einheit" (35 years of German unity).

Both blocks are arranged along a central axis, slightly offset and joined by an enlarged "D" that symbolizes the union between East and West during these three and a half decades. Two horizontal lines at the top and bottom frame the composition, simultaneously evoking the memory of a wall that, once opened, gave way to freedom.

The top part features the initials of the designer, Thomas Serres (“TS”), and the corresponding mint mark: A (Berlin), D (Munich), F (Stuttgart), G (Karlsruhe), or J (Hamburg). The bottom part shows the year of issue, 2025 , and the “D” code for Germany. The outer ring displays, as is customary on euro coins, the twelve stars of the European Union.

The song also bears its own distinctive seal: the inscription "EINIGKEIT UND RECHT UND FREIHEIT" (Unity, Justice and Freedom), accompanied by a stylized federal eagle.

A coin for memory

The coin issued today is not just a numismatic object. It is a tangible reminder of the struggle, hope, and unity that shaped contemporary Germany. With its sober and meaningful typography, it commemorates not only a well-rounded anniversary, but also the courage of those who believed in democracy and unity in the face of division.

And with it begins a series that, in the coming years, will transform the political history of the Federal Republic into small pieces of metal that will be passed from hand to hand, carrying with them the memory of Germany's great moments and protagonists.
