Uruguay has issued a commemorative coin that will bring a smile to more than one tango lover's face around the world: Carlos Gardel , the eternal "Zorzal Criollo," appears on the obverse of a silver coin dedicated to the reopening of the historic Escayola Theater in Tacuarembó.

Gardel, whose voice conquered theaters, cafés, and radio stations on both sides of the Atlantic, is immortalized once again, this time in precious metal. With his hat tilted and his expression close, his portrait reminds us why he remains, almost a century after his death, the great reference point of tango.

The obverse: Gardel, eternal ambassador of tango

The main face of the coin features Gardel, accompanied by the inscription "El Zorzal Criollo" and the year 2024. The figure of the singer, deeply rooted in the Spanish imagination thanks to his numerous tours and the rise of tango in cities like Madrid and Barcelona, is a cultural bridge between Uruguay and Spain.

The other side is dedicated to the Escayola Theater, inaugurated in 1891 and reopened in 2024 after more than half a century of neglect. Its intricately engraved façade recalls the architectural splendor of this space, which has once again become a cultural meeting point in the interior of Uruguay.

Gardel, shared myth

Carlos Gardel doesn't just belong to Uruguay or Argentina: his figure is a shared myth throughout the Hispanic world. In Spain, his tangos were played in theaters and radio stations in the 1930s, and even today, El día que me quieres (The Day You Love Me) and Volver (The Return) are part of the collective musical memory.

That's why this coin is more than just a collector's item. It's a tribute to the artist who transformed tango into a universal heritage and who remains, for millions of people, the voice of the Río de la Plata.
