La Monnaie de Paris recently unveiled its new coins dedicated to the Year of the Horse, part of the Chinese Calendar series, which each year celebrates one of the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac. In 2026, it will be the turn of this sign, considered in Chinese culture to be one of the most energetic and passionate.

The Horse is a symbol of ardor, independence, and freedom, and those born under its influence are characterized by a lively, enthusiastic, and life-loving nature. It is no coincidence that this figure occupies such an important place in Chinese astrology, where each animal governs a twelve-year cycle. The Mouse, the Ox, the Tiger, the Rabbit, the Dragon, the Snake, the Horse, the Goat, the Monkey, the Rooster, the Dog, and the Pig make up this sequence, which has been repeated for centuries.

The origin of this tradition lies in the Chinese calendar, one of the oldest in the world and a lunisolar calendar. Its months begin with the new moon and reach the full moon around the fifteenth. To maintain synchronization with the solar year, intercalary months are added in certain years, following astronomical rules based on solar terms, so that on average seven additional months are inserted every 19-year cycle. Thanks to this balance between lunar phases and the solar year, this structure has endured for more than two millennia and is still used today to calculate traditional festivals.

Common design

In the center of the obverse, we see a majestic galloping horse, symbolizing the crossing of a ring engraved with traditional Chinese motifs. The moving horse evokes the characteristics of the natives of this sign: energy, independence, and passion. The year "2026" and the inscription "YEAR OF THE HORSE" appear in the upper left corner.

The reverse , meanwhile, depicts all the animals of the Chinese zodiac arranged on a screen surrounding a traditional temple gate. A complete cycle of the Chinese zodiac begins in 2018 and lasts until 2029. Each of these twelve years highlights an animal from this calendar. The face value of the coin is located in the upper left corner, and the initials "RF" (French Republic) appear on the gate, with the inscription "CALENDRIER CHINOIS" (CHINESE CALENDAR) below.
