On September 8, 2025, the Bank of Russia issued a commemorative 3-ruble silver coin dedicated to the 150th anniversary of tennis in Russia . This coin is part of the series dedicated to the country's sporting milestones and celebrates a century and a half of tennis history, from its first imperial matches to the triumphs of Russian stars in the world's most prestigious tournaments.

150 years of tennis in Russia: from the imperial gardens to the major leagues

Tennis arrived in Russia in 1875, just a year after it was patented in the United Kingdom. A diary entry by Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich, son of Tsar Alexander II, records how he and his brothers first played the game in the Alexander Garden at Tsarskoye Selo, introducing the sport to the Russian aristocracy.

Throughout the 20th century, tennis evolved from elite entertainment to a sport with clubs and national tournaments. However, it was in contemporary Russia where the sport reached its peak. Russian players won Grand Slam titles, Olympic gold medals, and victories in the Davis Cup and Fed Cup, cementing the country as a powerhouse in world tennis. 

Obverse: Embossed with the National Coat of Arms of the Russian Federation , surrounded by the inscription «РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ» (Russian Federation) and technical details of the metal. The lower part reads «БАНК РОССИИ» (Bank of Russia), the face value «3 RUBLYA» and the year «2025 г.».

Reverse: Features a golden tennis ball and two crossed rackets over a net, finished with a matte laser finish. The upper perimeter features "TENNIS IN RUSSIA" (Tennis in Russia) and, in the lower right corner, "150 YEARS" (150 years).
