The Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) announced the issuance of the third coin in the "Emblematic Places of the Provinces" series, dedicated to the Casona de Santa Rosa, located in the province of Guanacaste, for today, September 24. This coin is part of a collection of seven pieces with a face value of 25 colones, created to highlight representative sites in each province of the country.

A collection that celebrates national identity

The "Emblematic Places of the Provinces" series seeks to honor Costa Rica's cultural and geographical richness through a numismatic tour of its seven provinces. The coins feature two versions of the same design: one with color application and one without, the only difference being this.

Each piece is dedicated to a site of great historical or natural value, including:

Manzanillo Beach (Limón)

Puntarenas Lighthouse (Puntarenas)

Santa Rosa Mansion (Guanacaste)

The Fort (Heredia)

Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels (Carthage)

Arenal Volcano (Alajuela)

National Theater (San José)

Coin House of Santa Rosa (Guanacaste)

The Casona de Santa Rosa, located in Guanacaste within Santa Rosa National Park, is a historic symbol of Costa Rica. The Battle of Santa Rosa took place there on March 20, 1856, where the Costa Rican army defeated William Walker's filibusters in a matter of minutes, defending national and Central American sovereignty.

The colonial-style mansion has been restored and now serves as a historical museum commemorating the heroic feat. The park also protects valuable tropical dry forest ecosystems, combining cultural and natural heritage in one place.

The reverse of the new coin features the texts "Provincia de Guanacaste," "Casona de Santa Rosa," and the year of approval for this issue: "2023." The design highlights the Casona de Santa Rosa, renowned for the historic Battle of Santa Rosa, where Costa Rica fought against the filibusters in 1856. The structure has been declared a National Monument of Costa Rica and a historical museum.

The upper part of the coin's obverse features the legends "República de Costa Rica" and "Banco Central de Costa Rica," and the two bars at the bottom are in high relief, making it easy to recognize by touch. This coin has a smooth edge.
