At the heart of every nation are dates that transcend the calendar, moments that become symbols of identity and collective pride. For Uruguay, August 25, 1825, is one of those immortal days: the Declaration of Independence . Today, two centuries later, the country celebrates it not only with events and tributes, but also with a coin that encapsulates the memory of that event in precious metal: the new Commemorative Coin for the Bicentennial of Independence.

A different coin, for a unique date

The Central Bank of Uruguay (BCU) intended this coin to be as special as the history it represents. That's why it's not circular, like most others, but rather a diamond-shaped coin , a bold design that immediately captures attention and reinforces its commemorative character.

Minted in 900 silver , measuring 33 millimeters on each side and weighing 12.5 grams , the piece shines like a small chest where the past and present meet.

On its obverse , the coin displays the Monument to National Independence , erected in the city of Florida and inaugurated in 1879. The majestic figure that crowns it seems to rise again to proclaim eastern sovereignty.

The reverse pays homage to one of the most emblematic representations of that moment: a detail from the painting "Assembly of Florida" by the artist Eduardo Amézaga. There, the delegates of the eastern people gather solemnly to take a step of no return toward freedom. The scene is accompanied by the famous phrase that resonated on that August 25th: "In fact and by law, free and independent."

The day the homeland was born

To understand the weight of this coin, we must go back two centuries.

It was 1825 when, after years of struggle and political ups and downs, the easterners found in the city of Florida the stage to seal their destiny. It was there that, meeting in an Assembly, they approved the Fundamental Laws :

The Law of Independence , which broke the rule of the Empire of Brazil.

The Law of Union , which expressed the will to join the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata.

And the Flag Law , which adopted the Artigas flag as its flag.

That day, the people of the eastern region rose up with a firm voice to declare themselves free and independent , not only as a fait accompli, but as an inalienable right. The feat of the Thirty-Three Easterners , which had begun months earlier on Agraciada Beach with the cry of "Liberty or Death," reached its culminating moment in the Florida Assembly.

A limited edition, an eternal memory

The BCU has minted only 1,500 examples of this coin, reinforcing its collector's status and symbolic value. Each one is a small, tangible testament to two centuries of history, a bridge between the heroes of 1825 and the generations enjoying the freedom they won today.

More than a coin, it is a silver reminder that independence is not just a fact of the past, but a living legacy that continues to define Uruguay's identity.
