The Italian State Mint (IPZS) will issue a new commemorative coin on April 15th to mark the 150th anniversary of Corriere della Sera, one of Italy's most influential newspapers. This coin pays tribute to press freedom and the central role of the Milanese daily in shaping the nation's history and development.
Corriere della Sera
Corriere della Sera is one of Italy's most influential newspapers and a historical landmark of European journalism. Founded in Milan on March 5, 1876, by Eugenio Torelli Viollier, it began as a newspaper aimed at the emerging industrial bourgeoisie of northern Italy, in a context of consolidation of the Italian state following unification. Its growth was particularly significant under the editorship of Luigi Albertini (1900–1925), a period in which it achieved widespread circulation and established itself as a media outlet with considerable political, economic, and cultural influence.
Throughout the 20th century, the newspaper went through complex periods linked to Italian history, including its adaptation during the Fascist regime and its subsequent reconfiguration after World War II, when it regained a central role in the country's democratic life. With its historic headquarters on Via Solferino in Milan, Corriere della Sera has distinguished itself through its general-interest approach and moderate editorial line, combining political, economic, cultural, and social news with contributions from renowned intellectuals.
Currently, the newspaper is part of the RCS MediaGroup and maintains its position as one of Italy's highest-circulation daily newspapers, with a strong presence in both print and digital formats. Its ability to adapt to technological changes and new information consumption habits has allowed it to preserve its relevance, consolidating its position as a key player in the Italian and European media landscape.
