The coin dedicated to the Cape St. Vincent lighthouse issued by the INCM last year 2025, which inaugurated the "Lighthouses of Portugal" collection, finally received yesterday, April 28, the launch of its latest version: the one minted in silver and proof quality that incorporates a translucent ring that emits light electronically, simulating a curious miniature lighthouse.
The production of this coin has been quite a challenge for the INCM, and it was the reason why its delay was announced last year, due to the complexity of its production.
5€ COIN – SILVER PROOF
The obverse depicts an image of the Cape St. Vincent lighthouse as seen from the southeast. To its left is an armillary sphere bearing the Portuguese coat of arms and a perspective representation of the Atlantic Ocean. At the bottom center of the composition is the inscription "Cabo de São Vicente," and further down, on the right edge, the name of the coin's author, José João de Brito, and the inscription "Casa da Moeda" (Mint).
The reverse side features a series of partially cut radial and concentric lines, reminiscent of the Fresnel lens commonly used in headlight optics. At the top of the design, between the concentric lines, is the name of the issuing country, "Portugal," while the face value, "5 euro," is indicated in the center, and the year of issue, "2025," is at the bottom.
PRESENTATION
The coin incorporates an integrated mechanism that, when the case is opened, activates the illumination of its translucent ring with a warm light. The system is powered by a rechargeable battery and charges via USB-C. It also includes an automatic battery protection mode that activates after approximately 25 days of inactivity to preserve battery life.
