Finland will once again transform a €2 coin into a miniature work of art. In 2026, the Nordic country will issue a new commemorative coin dedicated to Raili and Reima Pietilä, one of the most influential, original, and recognizable architectural couples in 20th-century Finnish architecture. This is no random choice: their legacy remains synonymous with creativity, national identity, and a unique understanding of modernity.

The future piece will not only be of interest to collectors. It also represents a profound cultural recognition of two figures who broke the mold and shaped an architecture deeply connected to nature, the landscape, and Finnish sensibility.

According to preliminary information about this issue, the coin will have an estimated maximum mintage of 204,000 units and its release into circulation is planned for autumn 2026. 

The design: Dipoli as a symbol of its legacy

The official description of the coin explains that the design honors Raili and Reima Pietilä through their organic approach to modern architecture. This idea is represented by the façade of Dipoli, one of their most celebrated buildings, completed in 1966.

Dipoli, located in Espoo, is an iconic work of 20th-century Finnish architecture. Originally conceived as a student center, the building has become an international landmark over time for its almost sculptural language, its expressive use of materials, and its integration with the surrounding environment. Its fragmented forms, irregular volumes, and relationship with nature perfectly encapsulate the philosophy of the Pietilä family.

The text “RAILI REIMA PIETILÄ” will appear diagonally across the top center of the coin, one word per line. The mint mark and the inscription “FI” will be located on the left edge, while the year 2026 will appear horizontally below these elements.
