The second U.S. dollar coin of 2026, and the thirty-first in the American Innovation series, was issued today, April 7. This new coin is dedicated to the state of Wisconsin and pays tribute to the Cray-1 supercomputer, considered the fastest and most iconic of the 1970s.

The Coin

The design features a stylized aerial view of the Cray-1 supercomputer, whose distinctive curved shape forms a "C," alluding to the names "Cray" and "computer." The coin bears the inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "WISCONSIN," along with the additional legend "CRAY-1 SUPERCOMPUTER," identifying the pioneering model of this machine.

The obverse common to all coins in the series features a profile of the Statue of Liberty, with the inscriptions “IN GOD WE TRUST” and “$1”. Since 2019, this obverse has also incorporated a small privy mark in the shape of a gear, alluding to industry and innovation. On the 2026 coins, this symbol is modified to include a Liberty Bell with the inscription “250”, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding (1776–2026). (The edge of each coin is engraved with the year 2026, the mint mark, and the motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM”, common to the $1 coins in this series.)

It is worth noting that, since 2011, one-dollar coins have not been issued for general circulation ; the US Mint produces them solely for numismatic purposes for collectors, distributing them in rolls, bags, and special sets.
