To mark the 80th anniversary of the publication of The Little Prince in France, the poetry of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and the Monnaie de Paris have joined forces for the first issue of a commemorative €2 coin dedicated to this universal work. The coin was officially released today, January 29, cementing the Little Prince's place as one of the great classics of French literature.

First published in France in 1946, The Little Prince is much more than a children's story. It is a timeless work that has transcended generations thanks to its profoundly human message, centered on friendship, poetry, and a curious perspective on the world. Translated into 627 languages and dialects, it has become one of the most widely read and translated books in history.

Written and illustrated by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry himself, the work was initially published in 1943 in New York, in simultaneous English and French editions, before being published in France by Gallimard, where it achieved immediate success, exceeding 15 million copies sold.

To commemorate this anniversary, the Paris Mint pays tribute to the little star traveler with a collection that celebrates the spirit of adventure and imagination.

However, the issue is not without controversy, as the coin will not enter circulation, a decision that has generated debate given that it is a universal and accessible work, which could have been a heartfelt and educational tribute within everyone's reach.

The coin will have a global mintage of 320,000 units, which includes versions in cases, in Proof and Reverse Proof qualities, as well as four different coincard models in BU quality.

DESIGN

The obverse design of the coin depicts the Little Prince in a pensive pose, evoking the reflection and sensitivity that define Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's iconic work. Behind the figure, the number "80," the anniversary symbol, is stylistically integrated into the composition.

At the top of the design is the inscription "Le Petit Prince", next to the initials "RF" (République Française), and at the bottom of the composition is indicated the year of issue, 2026.
