On February 6, 2026, the United States Mint released the first coin in its new commemorative "Charters of Freedom" series: the 2026 platinum proof coin dedicated to the Declaration of Independence. This special issue celebrates the 250th anniversary of American independence and marks the beginning of a trilogy that will also include coins dedicated to the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

A coin that symbolizes the birth of a nation

This one-ounce platinum coin pays homage to one of the most important founding documents in American history: the Declaration of Independence of 1776. This document proclaimed the formal separation of the thirteen colonies from British rule and laid the ideological foundations of the new country, drawing inspiration from the Enlightenment ideals of liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty.

The "Charters of Freedom" series uses natural motifs to represent the transformative impact of America's founding documents, collectively illustrating a living embodiment of American democracy.

Artistic design and symbolism

 

The obverse of the coin depicts sunbeams emerging from storm clouds, symbolizing both the dawn of a new nation born from the turmoil of revolution and the Enlightenment ideals that influenced the Declaration of Independence. A quill, representing the Declaration, extends across the landscape, marking the foundation of our nation and the power of revolutionary ideas to catalyze change. The design features 13 stars along the rim, representing the 13 original colonies. The inscriptions include “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” “2026,” and “DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE.”

 

The common reverse of this series depicts an eagle in flight, holding an olive branch in its talons. The inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA”, “$100”, “1 OZ.” and “.9995 PLATINUM”.
