The Monnaie de Paris pays tribute to the founding values of the French Republic with a new collection of coins dedicated to the emblematic figure of the Genius.
An allegorical symbol born at the heart of the country's national history and heir to ancient traditions, the French Genius has traversed the centuries as the embodiment of awakening, progress, justice, and humanism. Present in numerous works of art and coins, the Genius is a winged figure, often depicted as male, recognizable by a flame (or a star) on his forehead.
For three consecutive years, the Monnaie de Paris will mint coins in this collection, based on a different value of the republican motto: Liberty, Equality and Fraternity.
COLLECTION
Freedom – 2026
Starring the Genius of Liberty, who is depicted naked with angel wings, an allegory of Liberation. In his right hand, he proudly holds a torch, a symbol of the light that will guide the people, while in his left hand he clutches a broken chain.
The Genius of Equality – 2027
In 2027, the featured coin will be the Genius of the Constitution, an iconic work by engraver Augustin Dupré, which already appears on historical and collector coins. This symbol, engraved on the French Constitution, embodies the value of equality before the law, enshrined in the French motto.
The Genius of Fraternity – 2028
The year 2028 will mark the end of this trilogy with the minting, for the first time, of a new, previously unseen Genius coin by Augustin Dupré. This coin, interpreted by the Monnaie de Paris, will be the symbol of Fraternity for the year 2028.
2026: FREEDOM
To inaugurate this trilogy, the Monnaie de Paris has chosen to represent the Genius of Liberty, an iconic figure created by Auguste Dumont in 1830 to crown the July Column erected in the Place de la Bastille in Paris.
Depicted nude with angel wings, the Genius of Liberty proudly wields a torch in his right hand, a symbol of the light that guides the people, while in his left he grasps a broken chain, illustrating the liberation of the oppressed. This figure embodies the revolutionary spirit and ideals of liberty that forged the French nation.
Auguste Dumont's original sculpture is a powerful tribute to the values of freedom and resistance against oppression. By choosing this image for the first coin in the trilogy, the Monnaie de Paris celebrates not only the artistic and historical legacy of the Genius of Liberty, but also his timeless message of freedom and emancipation, which still resonates today.
COINS
100€ coin
The obverse design of this first coin in the collection is inspired by the Genie of the Bastille, an allegorical figure of the Republic, often depicted nude and winged. He holds a torch in his right hand, a symbol of light and progress, and a broken chain in his left, representing emancipation.
The reverse of the coin, common to the entire trilogy, features the French motto. A bundle of sticks, a strong republican symbol, replaces the tree trunk on the 100-franc "Fraternity" coins (1988), topped by a Phrygian cap, emblem of liberty and order.
