On February 11, Italy issued two new pure gold coins, with face values of 20 and 50 euros, dedicated to the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games, a world-class sporting event that once again places the country at the center of the international Olympic movement.

The 2026 Winter Olympic Games are being held from February 6 to 22, 2026, in northern Italy and are being jointly organized by the cities of Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo, along with other venues spread across the regions of Lombardy, Veneto, and Trentino-Alto Adige. The event will mark the return of the Winter Olympic Games to Italy twenty years after the 2006 Turin Winter Games, and will also be the fourth time the country has hosted the Olympic Games, following the 1956 Cortina d'Ampezzo Winter Games and the 1960 Rome Summer Games.

The Milan-Cortina 2026 project prioritizes an organizational model that uses existing or temporary facilities, aiming to reduce environmental impact and optimize resources. The competitions will take place in various alpine and urban locations, blending sporting tradition with modernity, and will bring together thousands of athletes from over 80 countries in disciplines such as alpine skiing, biathlon, figure skating, ice hockey, and snowboarding.

DESIGN

The official logo of the Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games appears in the center of the obverse. Around the edge, above a radial design, is the inscription "REPUBBLICA ITALIANA" (Italian Republic). On the right side of the design is the letter "R," identifying the Rome Mint, and below it, the year of issue, "2026."

The official mascot of the Olympic Games is depicted skiing in the center of the reverse. Around the edge, again on a radial design, is the inscription "GIOCHI OLIMPICI INVERNALI DI MILANO CORTINA 2026" (Milan-Cortina Winter Olympic Games 2026). At the top of the design is an inscription indicating the weight and purity of the metal, and at the bottom, the face value in euros. To the left is the signature of the coin's designer, "A.VECCHIO" (Antonio Vecchio).
