The Vatican City State has just officially issued and put on sale the commemorative €2 coin dedicated to the Sede Vacante 2025, an exceptional issue marking a historic moment in the Catholic Church: the period between the end of the papacy and the election of a new Pope. This coin, minted in Uncirculated (U) quality, went on sale today, February 4, 2026, after a delay in its issuance.
Context: What is the Vacant Seat?
The Sede Vacante is the period when the Holy See is vacant, either due to the death or resignation of the Pope, and extends until the election of his successor. During this time, the Cardinal Camerlengo assumes administrative functions, and preparations are made for the conclave to elect the new pontiff. Coins commemorating this period are extremely rare; the last similar issue was in 2013, following the resignation of Benedict XVI.
Coin design
The design features the coat of arms of the Cardinal Chamberlain, positioned beneath the symbol of the Apostolic Chamber: two crossed keys surmounted by a conopeum. Along the coin's edge are the inscriptions "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO," "SEDE VACANTE," and "MMXXV," indicating the year of issue. Between "CITTÀ DEL VATICANO" and "SEDE VACANTE" is an abstract representation of a dove, symbol of the Holy Spirit.
