On March 5th, the Italian State Mint (Istituto Poligrafico e Zecca dello Stato – IPZS) will issue a commemorative coin dedicated to the International Year of Women Farmers, a social initiative developed in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The issue is a tangible and institutional recognition of the strategic role played by millions of women in agri-food systems worldwide.
A broadcast with profound social significance
The coin was created to honor the competence, resilience, and daily dedication of women farmers, whose contribution is essential to food security and rural development. Too often, their work remains invisible or undervalued, despite being a fundamental pillar in food production, processing, and distribution.
The collaboration with the FAO reinforces the international character of the initiative, aligning it with the global sustainable development goals, especially those related to gender equality, the eradication of hunger and the reduction of poverty.
International Year of Women Farmers
The proclamation of 2026 as the International Year of Women Farmers responds to the need to formally recognize women's contribution to the primary sector and to promote policies that foster gender equality in rural areas. In many regions of the world, women represent a substantial part of the agricultural workforce. However, they continue to face structural barriers such as:
Limited access to land and property.
Difficulties in obtaining financing and credit.
Reduced access to agricultural technologies and technical training.
Wage gaps and limited representation in decision-making bodies.
Several international studies have shown that if women had the same access to productive resources as men, agricultural production could increase significantly, reducing the number of people suffering from food insecurity. Therefore, the International Year not only seeks to highlight their work, but also to promote concrete reforms that guarantee equal opportunities, dignified working conditions, and social protection.
OBVERSE
The obverse of the coin features the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) logo in the center and, just below it, the signature of the coin's designer, "A. MASINI" (Annalisa Masini). The inscription "REPUBBLICA ITALIANA" appears at the top of the design. At the bottom is the face value "5 EURO" surrounded by stylized wheat grains, among which is also the initial "R," identifying the Rome Mint.
REVERSE
The reverse of the piece shows in the foreground a color representation of the official logo of the International Year of Women Farmers 2026, framed by the inscription of the reason for the issue and the year.
