The Monnaie de Paris has issued a 2026 quarter-euro coin dedicated to the Longmen Grottoes, one of the world's most important collections of Buddhist sculpture and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The coin is part of a French series that pays tribute to major cultural landmarks, translating into numismatic form a monumental landscape carved into the rock more than 1,500 years ago.

Coin design

Obverse

On the obverse, in the foreground, is a representation of Vairocana Buddha, one of the principal statues in the Longmen Grottoes. He embodies universal cosmic wisdom. In the background are the Longmen Grottoes: a collection of niches and sculptures that symbolize this historic site, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also depicted are two celestial guardians: on the left, General Vajrapani, bearer of the vajra, a symbol of spiritual power and protection against evil forces; on the right, the Celestial King Vaiśravaṇa, in armor, holds a pagoda, a symbol of vigilance and prosperity. They are protectors of Buddhist law and embody military power in service to the Dharma. Also depicted on the left is a peony in full bloom, evoking nobility, peace, and spiritual awakening.

Reverse

The reverse is common to all coins in the series. It depicts the globe with parallels and meridians on the left and the inscriptions of the main UNESCO World Heritage sites on the right. These inscriptions appear carved in stone, evoking the Rosetta Stone. The left side of the globe is surrounded by the UNESCO logo and the inscription "World Heritage." The face value is inscribed on the left side of the globe, blending seamlessly with the parallels and meridians.
