On February 24, the Monnaie de Paris will launch a commemorative collection dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the French sports daily L'Équipe , one of the most influential publications in the European sports press since its founding in 1946.
Minted by the Paris Mint, this special issue combines the art of engraving with a passion for sport, immortalizing some of the most iconic moments in contemporary sporting history. The inaugural collection will consist of four €10 silver coins and one €50 gold coin, each dedicated to a different sport: football, Formula 1, tennis, and rugby.
Each obverse features an athlete captured in a decisive moment: the soccer player taking the shot, the tennis player serving, the Formula 1 driver celebrating victory, and the rugby player receiving the pass. The figures are set against a background of historic L'Équipe front pages, a visual nod connecting eight decades of sports journalism with the engravers' craftsmanship.
The initiative not only commemorates the newspaper's informative legacy, but also celebrates its role as a privileged chronicler of the great milestones of world sport: from the Olympic Games to the Grand Slam tournaments, passing through the Tour de France and the competitions played in the most famous stadiums on the planet.
A collection with continuity until 2028
This issue marks the beginning of a series that will run until 2028. After this first installment dedicated to four sports, the collection will continue in 2027 and 2028 with the addition of two new disciplines each year, thus expanding the tribute to other specialties that have marked the history of the newspaper.

COMMON REVERSE SIDE OF THE COLLECTION
On the reverse of the entire collection, we see a representation of headlines from front pages inspired by L'Équipe. The names of the sports are reproduced in a graphic style based on the press, evoking the newspaper's typographic universe and highlighting the link between the history of sport and L'Équipe's media legacy. Also present are the initials "RF" (French Republic), the year of issue "2026", the face value, and the marks of Joaquín Jiménez and the engraving workshop.
