On February 5th, the United States Mint will issue one of its new commemorative coins to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence.
The coin will specifically focus on the Mayflower Compact, considered one of the earliest examples of self-government in North America.

Obverse

The obverse design depicts two pilgrims embracing as they gaze upon the New World. The pilgrims did not reach their intended destination; therefore, they did not have a charter to establish a colony in Plymouth. Instead, the Mayflower Compact, signed on November 21, 1620, established the colony as a mutual enterprise, its legal force dependent on the colonists' consent to promote the common good. The Mayflower Compact is considered a precursor to the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. Framing the scene are the inscriptions: "E PLURIBUS UNUM," "1776 ~ 2026," and "IN GOD WE TRUST."

Reverse

The reverse design depicts the Mayflower, sails unfurled on rough seas, heading west. The pilgrims aboard sought religious freedom in the New World, reaching Cape Cod and settling in what would later become Plymouth, Massachusetts. Surrounding the central image are the inscriptions: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "MAYFLOWER PACT," and the face value "25¢."
