On September 11, Germany will issue a new coin in the "Women of Influence" series, this time dedicated to Elly Heuss-Knapp, a figure ahead of her time. The issue also commemorates the 75th anniversary of the founding of the organization she founded, Müttergenesungswerk (Mothers' Home for Convalescent Mothers), dedicated to supporting mothers in Germany.

Elly Heuss-Knapp

Elly Heuss-Knapp, born in 1881, showed a deep commitment to women's rights from a very young age. At 19, in 1900, she opened the first "higher education school for girls," where she taught regularly. During her studies and after her marriage and the birth of her son in 1910, she began writing for newspapers and magazines, in addition to giving lectures on topics such as school education, home management, the role of women in business, and the feminist movement. Her first book, Civic Studies and Economics for Women, went through eight editions, cementing her reputation as an educator and writer.

As one of the few politically active women of her time, Heuss-Knapp ran for the Reichstag for the German Democratic Party (DDP) in 1918 and 1920. She produced propaganda leaflets and poems, gave numerous election speeches, and encouraged women to become active after the introduction of women's suffrage: "Women, campaign and vote! Every vote counts!"

With the rise of the Nazi regime, her broadcasting career was interrupted, and her husband, Theodor Heuss—who would later become Germany's first Federal President—had to resign from his position as a professor at the German School of Politics. To contribute to the family income, Elly worked in advertising and developed the concept of the radio jingle, revolutionizing advertising at the time.

Elly Heuss-Knapp challenged the traditional model of the homemaker. Even as a wife and mother, she continued to work and maintain an active social participation, supported by a relationship of mutual respect and collaboration with her husband. Considered her greatest achievement, she founded the Müttergenesungswerk in 1950, together with Dr. Antonie Nopitsch. Drawing on her own experience balancing family, career, and home, her goal was to preserve and strengthen the health of mothers, later expanding her care to include fathers and caregivers.

Today, five social welfare organizations operate under the umbrella of the Müttergenesungswerk, focusing their work on holistic treatment measures and the "therapeutic chain": from the initial consultation, through treatment in accredited clinics, to aftercare, providing comprehensive support throughout the recovery process.

Elly Heuss-Knapp passed away on July 19, 1952, leaving behind a legacy of social and educational commitment that continues to have a positive impact today.

The reverse of the coin, designed by artist Susanne Hopmann, features a three-quarter profile portrait of Elly Heuss-Knapp, rendered with great delicacy and attention to detail. It is complemented by the Müttergenesungswerk logo and the anniversary number "75." With its masterfully rendered expression, the portrait radiates openness, empathy, and strength. The typography is based on the typefaces used during the Müttergenesungswerk's founding.

Finally, the reverse of the coin features the stylized eagle, the emblem of the German coat of arms. This central motif is accompanied by the inscription identifying the issuing country: "BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND" (Federal Republic of Germany), the face value "20 EURO," and the mint mark "F," corresponding to Stuttgart. The lower section of the design also indicates the metal and its purity, "SILBER 925," as well as the year of issue, "2025," at the top; and on one side, the twelve European stars.
