The Bank of Estonia (Eesti Pank) issues today, June 6, a silver collector's coin dedicated to the Estonian farmer couple, who symbolize the most important and typical social archetype in Estonian history, and is intertwined with the search for the independence and sovereignty of the country.
Independent small farmer families have had an extraordinarily important position in Estonian history. That status gave them a high position in the hierarchy of local society. Estonian farms began to be bought up on a large scale in the mid-19th century, and the peasant family became one of the driving economic and social forces in Estonian society.
In the center of the obverse of the coin is the engraved silhouette of a couple of farmers, who are surrounded by a frame made up of farm buildings, domestic animals, a garden gate, tools and a well with a pole.
The obverse of the piece shows the coat of arms of the Republic of Estonia, a pair of swallows, the year of issue “2023” and the inscription of the issuing country “EESTI VABARIIK” (Republic of Estonia).
This collector's coin has been designed by Riho Luuse and minted by the Lithuanian Mint.
