The Vatican announces the issuance of the first 2 euro commemorative coin of the two that will be issued this year. This coin, dedicated to the "V Centenary of the death of Pietro Perugino" will be sold first to numismatic professionals starting tomorrow, June 20, and approximately 15 days later to subscribers to Vatican numismatic issues.
Perugino
Pietro di Cristoforo Vanucci, known as El Perugino (1448 – 1523), was an Italian 14th century painter, in transition to the High Renaissance. The nickname of Il Perugino (“the Perugino”) comes from his native Perugia (. His two fundamental influences were Piero della Francesca and Verrocchio, although filtered through the soft modes of Umbrian painting, of whose school he was a leader. He was the holder of two very active contemporary workshops, one in Florence and the other in Perugia.His fame was eclipsed, in part, by that of his most prestigious student, Raphael.
The coin
As usual, this commemorative coin is issued in two qualities, BU and Proof.
The coin's design features Perugino's portrait and a detail of The Baptism of Christ, a fresco in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican. At the top, on the right, in a semicircle, is the inscription «CITTÀ DEL VATICANO». At the bottom, there is the inscription "PERUGINO" and, below, the dates "1523◦2023". On the left is the mintmark "R" of the Rome Mint.
