The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) issued a new silver coin on June 23 dedicated to commemorating the 80th anniversary of the guaraní, Paraguay's official currency created in 1943, and which entered circulation a year later.

The piece issued is a tribute to Dr. Carlos A. Pedretti, one of the most prominent figures in the economic history of Paraguay and considered the creator of the monetary unit, who turns 80 on October 5.

The Guarani was born on October 5, 1943 as an emblem of the homeland, and a symbol of the economic and monetary independence of Paraguay.

The denomination of Guarani was established with Decree Law No. 655, which instituted the "Organic Monetary Regime of the Republic of Paraguay", a unit divided into 100 equal parts, and whose symbol is the G crossed from right to left. Banknotes entered circulation from 1944.

Pedretti was in charge of carrying out the monetary, banking and exchange reform from 1943 to 1945. The renowned intellectual of the mid-20th century was also president of the Banco del Paraguay, as well as the Banco de la República from 1940 to 1947.
