The fascinating journey into the world of dinosaurs comes to an end with the Ornithomimus velox, the twelfth and last coin in the Supersaurs series that the Austrian Mint has been issuing for the last few years. The Ornithomimus velox is the last to be represented, but not the least, since it was the fastest dinosaur that ever roamed the Earth.

Standing on long hind legs ending in three powerful claws, with a long flexible neck and large eyes set in a small head, Ornithomimus velox bore some resemblance to an ostrich, albeit with a long tail and arms instead of wings. The dinosaur even had a toothless jaw that tapered into a beak. Weighing about 150 kilograms and measuring 4 meters from beak to the tip of its long tail, Ornithomimus had legs considerably longer than its thighs and elongated metatarsal bones, typical features of a fast runner. Computer models have estimated that Ornithomimus had a top speed of between 60 and 80 kilometers per hour, but its powerful rear claws suggest that it was capable of defending itself and not just using its speed to evade attacks.

Although the remains found to date cannot exactly corroborate the diet of Ornithomimus, the presence of small gastroliths, stones that birds and other animals swallow to grind food, in the epigastric region of some skeletons, indicate that it was herbivorous. That said, Ornithomimus could also have fed on small reptiles and insects, another similarity to the ostrich, which despite having a predominantly plant-based diet and employing gastroliths, also ate caterpillars and grasshoppers.

The reverse of the coin shows a color printed Ornithomimus moving through a grassy landscape. A Nasutoceratops appears in the background.

This coin and all those in the series have the peculiarity that they have been colored with special inks that make the silhouette of the animal represented on the piece shine in the dark.

The obverse of the coin features the silhouettes of the 12 prehistoric animals from the Supersaurs series. All 3 euro coins in the series are legal tender in Austria.

The Austrian Mint has officially issued this twelfth and final piece in the series on September 14, 2022.
