Sfrânciocul mare (Lanius excubitor)

RO / HU / EN

A hét állatfaja #51: nagy őrgébics (Lanius excubitor)
Bár a nagy őrgébics rendszertanilag az énekesmadarak közé tartozik, s nyáron főként rovarokkal táplálkozik, télen jelentős mértékben fogyaszt kisebb gerinceseket is: pockokat, egereket.

EN: Did you know which passerine bird is an honorary raptor?
The species of the week #51: great grey shrike (Lanius excubitor)
Although taxonomically it is a songbird and in summer it is
mainly an insectivore, in winter it becomes an "honor" predator, eating gophers and other small rodents.
It was used in falconry in the past. Hawk trappers kept it in a wooden cage to alert the trapper of an approaching bird of prey. This way the shrike helped to catch hawks, for example.
They store some of the food they catch by impaling them on plant thorns or fence wire.
