The Royal Canadian Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint, announces the release today, September 28, of a bi-metallic $2 face coin, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of one of the most significant clashes in history. of sport. The USSR and Canada met in the 1972 Summit Series, a kind of 'world championship' to decide who was the best country in the sport of ice hockey.

Canada was crowned the undisputed hockey champion in a hard-fought tournament where national honor was on the line in every game. This victory brought Canadians together in celebrations that, 50 years later, still echo in the hearts and minds of those who witnessed this glorious chapter in the sport's history.

Of the 3 million coins that the issue consists of, 2 million are coloured. The coins are already being put into circulation throughout Canada.

Canadian artist Joel Kimmel's reverse design features two hockey players representing Team Canada in the 1972 Canada-USSR Summit Series. Opposite the team's iconic maple leaf jersey, which is highlighted in red on the colored coin, the hockey players are accompanied by the words "THE SERIES LA SÉRIE" and "50 YEARS ANS". On the outer ring, coaches' initials and player jersey numbers surround the inner core to represent Canada's team spirit.
