Few industrial silhouettes are as easily recognizable as that of a Vespa. A small wheel, the front shield, the elongated seat, and a body with gentle curves are enough to immediately conjure an image associated with Italy, the streets of Rome, the post-war reconstruction years, and a very specific way of understanding urban mobility.

The Vespa was born in 1946 as a simple, lightweight, and practical vehicle, designed to restore mobility to an Italy just emerging from war. Eight decades later, that little scooter has become one of Italy's most iconic products. To commemorate this journey, the Italian Republic has just issued a 5-euro silver coin dedicated to the Vespa's 80th anniversary.

The issue isn't simply about placing a scooter on a coin. Its design offers a brief journey through time: at the top is the 1946 Vespa 98, the first ever made; below, a Vespa Primavera created specifically for the anniversary celebration. Between them lie eighty years of design, social changes, travel, and a visual identity that has outlasted all trends.

The coin went on sale on June 25, 2026, coinciding with the big celebrations organized in Rome for Vespa's anniversary.

A coin that doesn't just look to the past

The greatest strength of this issue is that it doesn't present the Vespa as a nostalgic relic. The coin doesn't focus on the historical model or resort to a classic Dolce Vita scene. Instead, it juxtaposes two very different generations of the same vehicle.

The 1946 Vespa 98 occupies the upper part of the reverse. Its presence is significant because it was the model that paved the way. That first Vespa was publicly unveiled in Rome in the spring of 1946 and began production in Pontedera. During its first year, 2,484 units were produced, a modest figure by today's standards, but enough to launch one of Europe's most enduring industrial histories.

The original Vespa was equipped with a small, 98cc, two-stroke, single-cylinder engine and could reach speeds of approximately 60 kilometers per hour. However, its importance wasn't solely due to its mechanics. The design protected the rider from splashes, offered a more comfortable riding position than a conventional motorcycle, and facilitated daily use in the city. The Vespa didn't invent the scooter, but it did help to make it a popular, stylish, and recognizable form of transportation.

Beneath the Vespa 98 appears an 80th Anniversary Vespa Primavera. The difference between the two models is evident, but so is the continuity: the wraparound bodywork, the front shield, and the overall proportions remain instantly recognizable. This dialogue between the first model and a current Vespa is, in fact, the central theme of the coin.

The hexagon as a link between the two Vespas

The reverse side is arranged within a large hexagon, a shape linked to the corporate image of Vespa and Piaggio. It doesn't just function as a decorative frame. It serves to bring together two eras within the same space, as if the coin wanted to show that the current Vespa still retains an essential part of the one born in 1946.

The central inscription, “VESPA. FOREVER ICONIC”, separates the two motorcycles and reinforces this idea of continuity. On one side is the face value of 5 euros; on the other, the letter R, corresponding to the Rome mint. The signature of Valerio De Seta, the coin's creator, appears at the bottom.

The obverse features the official logo created for the 80th anniversary. Around it is the inscription REPUBBLICA ITALIANA, accompanied by small hexagons and the year 2026. It is a very clean side, designed to highlight the anniversary without visually competing with the reverse.

Vespa: from means of transport to symbol of Italy

The coin arrives at a particularly significant time for the brand. Between June 25 and 28, Rome hosted the Vespa Roma 2026 – 80 Years of an Icon event, with the Foro Italico and the Stadio dei Marmi as the main venues. The program included exhibitions, rallies, urban tours, historical models, clubs, and a grand Vespa parade through the city.

It's no coincidence that Rome was chosen as the setting. The Italian capital has become forever linked to the image of Vespa thanks to film, advertising, tourism, and the very evolution of the modern city. But Vespa's strength can't be explained solely by this romantic association with Italy.

For eight decades, the Piaggio scooter has adapted to a wide variety of audiences. It has been a family vehicle, a work tool, a youth symbol, a collector's item, and a design piece. It has been seen in Italian villages, major European capitals, Asian countries, and American cities. The 2026 celebration itself brought together participants from dozens of countries, proof that Vespa has finally become a brand with international reach.

It is not the first Italian coin dedicated to Vespa

Italy had already brought Vespa into its numismatic program in 2019. At that time, several 5 euro silver coins were issued within the Eccellenze Italiane series, with versions in green, white and red inspired by the colors of the Italian flag.

The 2019 series opted for a more graphic and contemporary image, with references to the Colosseum and Piaggio's visual universe. The 2026 coin follows a different approach: it doesn't seek to represent the urban environment or the tourist aspect of Vespa, but rather to condense its historical evolution into a single composition.

The comparison between the two issues is interesting. The 2019 pieces celebrated Vespa as an icon of Italian design; the 2026 one goes a step further and uses the anniversary to show the direct connection between the first commercial Vespa and one of its current models.
