The Croatian Mint, in collaboration with the National Bank of Croatia, continues the "Croatian Ships" series with a new issue this July featuring the Neretva barge.
The Neretva boat is a traditional vessel from the Neretva River valley and one of the great symbols of life in this region. It is a simple, shallow-draft wooden boat, adapted over centuries for navigating the marshes, tributaries, and canals of the Neretva. Along with the trupa (a type of boat), it played a vital role as a cargo and transport vessel, becoming an essential element of daily life for the inhabitants of the region.
The earliest known references to traditional boats in the Neretva Valley date back to the 17th century. They were recorded in chronicles and travelogues written by authors who were deeply impressed by this valley, the southernmost in Croatia. The boats were used to transport people, animals, agricultural products, food, building materials, and all kinds of goods necessary for life along the riverbanks.
With the development of the road network and the advent of motor vehicles, the boat gradually lost its original function as a means of transport. However, this tradition has managed to stay alive thanks to the local community and the strong connection the inhabitants of the Neretva Valley have with their heritage.
A particularly important role in preserving this tradition is played by the Ladja Marathon, a sporting and tourist event that helps to raise the profile of the Neretva region and preserve its cultural identity.
The importance of the Neretva boat is further reflected in the recognition given by the Croatian Ministry of Culture, which has declared it an intangible cultural asset of the Republic of Croatia, thus underlining its value for the preservation of the country's traditional heritage.
This issue comes in five versions with the same design, although minted in different qualities and metals.
4€ COIN – 1 OZ SILVER
Obverse
The designer, Petar Varga, depicts the bow and stern of the Neretva boat on the obverse, highlighting its distinctive shape and construction. The boat's structure is particularly prominent as one of the most recognizable features of this traditional vessel.
Reverse
The reverse side depicts the "parićanje," one of the traditional methods of propelling the Neretva boat by oar. This navigation system was chosen as the motif because it continues to keep the tradition of these boats alive through traditional competitions such as the Ladja Marathon.
