The Turkish Mint has put into circulation a new commemorative 5 lira coin dedicated to the tenth anniversary of the attempted coup of July 15, 2016. The piece commemorates a date that the country officially observes as Democracy and National Unity Day.

The issue was presented on July 15, 2026, by the Darphane ve Damga Matbaası Genel Müdürlüğü, an agency under the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. It is not a coin intended exclusively for collectors, but a bimetallic piece with legal tender status that will be found in ordinary circulation.

A commemoration that reaches people's wallets

Turkey has once again chosen to transform an everyday coin into a small memento of national memory. The new piece is based on the bimetallic 5-lira coin currently in circulation, preserving its dimensions, physical characteristics, and the side displaying the face value.

The modification is concentrated on the commemorative side. In the center is the logo created for the tenth anniversary, formed by the inscriptions "15 Temmuz" —July 15— and "10. Yıl" —10th anniversary—. Around it appears the legend:

DEMOKRASİ VE MİLLÎ BİRLİK GÜNÜ

Its translation into English is "Day of Democracy and National Unity." The composition is completed with the country's official name, TÜRKİYE CUMHURİYETİ, Republic of Turkey.

The reverse side retains the design of the ordinary 5-lira coin. The core displays the number 5 against a background of radial lines, accompanied by a large crescent moon and several stars. The outer ring features geometric motifs inspired by the eight-pointed Seljuk star, the national crescent and star, and the year of minting, 2026.

It also incorporates latent images that, depending on the angle from which the coin is viewed, allow you to distinguish the symbol of the Turkish lira or the letters TC, short for Türkiye Cumhuriyeti.

The memory of a decisive night for Türkiye

The coin is issued exactly ten years after the events of the night of July 15-16, 2016, when a part of the Turkish Armed Forces attempted to take control of state institutions.

The uprising failed after several hours of clashes and a large-scale mobilization of citizens, police, and military personnel loyal to the government. Since then, Turkish authorities have presented that day as a popular defense of the constitutional order and the will expressed at the ballot box.

July 15th was later declared a national holiday under the name of Democracy and National Unity Day. In 2026, the tenth anniversary was commemorated throughout the country with institutional events, exhibitions, ceremonies, and memorials dedicated to the 253 people officially remembered as having died during those events.

Darphane herself explained that the coin seeks to keep alive the memory of that night and transmit to future generations the values of unity, solidarity and defense of democracy that the Turkish State associates with July 15.
