The Royal Mint has unveiled a new coin collection dedicated to Game of Thrones to mark the 15th anniversary of the series' television premiere, which first aired in April 2011. The collection consists of two 50p coins inspired by the two major elements that underpin its narrative universe: ice and fire.

This marks the first time Game of Thrones has been featured on official UK coins. The issue, developed in collaboration with Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products, depicts two of the show's most recognizable figures: the Night King, representing ice, and one of Daenerys Targaryen's dragons, symbolizing fire.

Premiering on April 17, 2011, Game of Thrones became one of the biggest television phenomena of the 21st century. Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire book series by George R.R. Martin, the HBO production ran for eight seasons and built a vast fantasy world marked by dynastic struggles, political intrigue, and supernatural threats from the North.

Its influence extended far beyond television. The series reached an international audience of tens of millions of viewers, was distributed in more than 170 countries, and won 59 Emmy Awards —more than any other drama series up to that point. Characters, noble houses, creatures, and expressions like "Winter is coming" became part of popular culture.

The original title of the literary saga, A Song of Ice and Fire, serves as the conceptual starting point for this new broadcast. Ice is linked to the lands beyond the Wall, the White Walkers, and especially the Night King. Fire, meanwhile, is deeply connected to the lineage of House Targaryen, their dragons, and their famous motto: "Fire and Blood."

Both coins were designed by Ffion Rees and share the characteristic curved heptagonal shape of the British 50p coin. The pieces are offered in various versions, including cupronickel with a Brilliant Uncirculated finish, colored editions, sterling silver with a Proof finish and color, and an exclusive gold Proof version.

CUPRONICKEL COIN – ICE

Reverse

The reverse side is dedicated to ice, featuring a close-up of the Night King, one of the most unsettling and recognizable figures in Game of Thrones. His face occupies a large part of the composition and is depicted with a high level of detail, highlighting the angular shapes of his skin, the protrusions on his head, and his piercing gaze.

To the right is his personal emblem, inspired by the geometric figure used by the White Walkers at various points in the series. Below this symbol appears the official Game of Thrones logo, while along the top edge are the intellectual property trademarks belonging to HBO.

In the colored versions, the Night King's eyes appear highlighted in an intense blue tone, reinforcing his association with the cold, the dead, and the threat from the lands beyond the Wall.

PRESENTATION

The Brilliant Uncirculated cupronickel coin comes in a fold-out wallet illustrated with scenes and information related to the Night King, the White Walkers, and the Long Night. The packaging develops the theme of ice through snowy landscapes and some of the most representative moments of the threat advancing from the north.

CUPRONICKEL COIN – FIRE

Reverse

The reverse side is dedicated to fire and features one of Daenerys Targaryen's dragons, depicted in profile with its jaws wide open. The creature dominates almost the entire surface, allowing for a detailed view of its scales, teeth, horns, and crests.

Behind the dragon's head appears a map of Westeros, while in the upper right are the official Game of Thrones logo and the sigil of House Targaryen, a three-headed dragon arranged in a circle. This symbol represents Aegon the Conqueror and his sisters, Visenya and Rhaenys, who conquered much of the Seven Kingdoms with the help of their three dragons.

In the colored versions, different areas of the background incorporate an intense red hue that evokes flames, blood, and the destruction wrought by dragon fire. Additional details, such as the creature's eye, are also enhanced through the application of color.

PRESENTATION

The cupronickel version with a Brilliant Uncirculated finish comes in a fold-out wallet decorated with scenes related to Daenerys' dragons and the destructive power of fire. Inside, it includes texts about their birth, growth, and involvement in some of the most important events of the series.

COMMON FRONT

The obverse of the entire series features the official portrait of His Majesty King Charles III, by Martin Jennings. The monarch is depicted in profile, facing left, and surrounded by the inscription "CHARLES III · D · G · REX · F · D · 50 PENCE · 2026", along with the face value and the year of issue.
