The Bank of Russia has issued a new commemorative silver coin dedicated to the 400th anniversary of the founding of Naberezhnye Chelny, one of the main industrial cities of the Republic of Tatarstan.
The coin, issued on July 14, 2026, has a face value of 3 rubles and is part of the "Cities" numismatic series. Its design brings together some of the elements that best illustrate the transformation of Naberezhnye Chelny: the Kama River, its modern buildings, and, in the foreground, one of the famous KAMAZ trucks that forever changed the town's history and economy.
A city born on the banks of the Kama River
Naberezhnye Chelny is located in northeastern Tatarstan, on the left bank of the Kama River. Although the area has a much older history, the official founding of the present-day city dates back to 1626.
According to historical information published by the Bank of Russia, in that year a group of peasants led by Fyodor Popov crossed the Kama River and settled in some houses built in the area. The settlement was initially called Chalninsky Pochinok, which changed over time until it adopted its current name.
During the early years of the 20th century, the town gained prominence thanks to the grain trade. One of its most iconic structures was the large grain elevator, inaugurated in 1917, considered at the time one of the largest in Russia and now preserved as a historical and architectural monument.
However, the definitive transformation of Naberezhnye Chelny would come several decades later, when it was chosen as the site of one of the largest industrial projects in the Soviet Union.
KAMAZ, the factory that created a new city
Construction of the industrial complex for the production of KAMAZ trucks began in 1969. The scale of the project led to extraordinary urban and demographic growth, transforming Naberezhnye Chelny into one of Russia's major industrial centers.
On February 16, 1976, the first production vehicle rolled off the main assembly line at the factory: a KAMAZ-5320 identified by serial number 0000001. Therefore, in 2026, two closely linked anniversaries coincide: the 400th anniversary of the city and the 50th anniversary of the manufacture of that first truck.
The dual commemoration has been marked by numerous events organized throughout the year. The city officially launched its program of celebrations in January 2026, bringing together workers, factory veterans, construction workers, and institutional representatives. A postage stamp was also issued featuring the city's coat of arms, its business center, the Kama River, and other local symbols.
The Bank of Russia has now transferred that relationship between city and industry to metal, placing a KAMAZ truck in a prominent position within the numismatic composition.
A reverse side that summarizes four centuries of history
The reverse side features an urban composition developed on several planes. In the foreground, a KAMAZ truck is depicted in relief and viewed from a slight frontal perspective. Its position makes the vehicle the element closest to the observer and one of the true protagonists of the coin.
Behind it appears the municipal administration building, recognizable by its horizontal architecture, next to a large circular structure located opposite it. To the right rises a modern business center, its vertical structure contrasting with the rest of the landscape.
In the background, the silhouette of Naberezhnye Chelny can be seen stretching along the Kama River. This part of the design was created using laser etching, a technique that differentiates the horizon and creates a greater sense of depth compared to the main elements, which are embossed in relief.
At the top is the coat of arms of Naberezhnye Chelny. Its main motif is a boat sailing on waves, a direct reference to the river and the historical importance of river transport for the development of the town.
The Russian legend "НАБЕРЕЖНЫЕ ЧЕЛНЫ", equivalent to "Naberezhnye Chelny", runs across the upper part of the coin. To the left, distributed in two lines, appears the inscription "400 ЛЕТ", which translates as "400 years".
The result is not merely an architectural panorama. The succession of elements allows for a visual journey from the settlement founded on the banks of the Kama River to the contemporary industrial city: the river and the coat of arms recall its origins; the buildings showcase its urban development; and the truck symbolizes the industry that defined its modern history.
The obverse and its inscriptions
The obverse features the state coat of arms of the Russian Federation, consisting of a crowned double-headed eagle. Above the emblem appears the semicircular inscription "РОССИЙСКАЯ ФЕДЕРАЦИЯ", meaning "Russian Federation", bordered at both ends by rhomboid motifs.
To the left of the shield are shown the chemical symbol for silver, Ag, and the purity of the metal, 925. To the right is the pure silver content, 31.1 grams, accompanied by the mint mark of the St. Petersburg Mint.
