The Central Bank of Luxembourg continues its numismatic journey through the Solar System with a new collector coin dedicated to Saturn. This piece is the second in a series of six issues, which began in 2025 with the Sun and is designed to explore some of the most representative celestial bodies in our cosmic neighborhood.

Minted from one ounce of pure silver and enhanced through selective color application, the coin will be limited to only 1,000 pieces. It was issued during July 2026.

Saturn, the great planet of the rings

Located at an average distance of approximately 1.4 billion kilometers from the Sun, Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second largest in the Solar System, surpassed only by Jupiter. Its equatorial diameter is around 120,500 kilometers, meaning it is about nine times wider than Earth, although its composition, dominated primarily by hydrogen and helium, gives it an extraordinarily low density.

In fact, Saturn is the only planet in the Solar System whose average density is less than that of water. As a gas giant, it does not have a true solid surface, but rather an extensive atmosphere that gradually gives way to layers of gases and fluids subjected to increasingly greater pressures.

However, the feature that has made Saturn one of the most recognizable celestial bodies is its spectacular ring system. Although other giant planets also have rings, none possess such an extensive, bright, and complex structure. The rings are composed of billions of fragments of ice, rock, and dust, ranging in size from tiny particles to massive blocks. The main rings extend for hundreds of thousands of kilometers around the planet, yet they are surprisingly thin compared to their enormous width.

Saturn is also surrounded by an extraordinary family of natural satellites. Among them are Titan, the second largest moon in the Solar System and the only one known with a dense atmosphere, and Enceladus, beneath whose icy crust lies a global ocean. These characteristics have made the Saturnian system one of the prime targets of modern planetary exploration. The Cassini mission, which orbited the planet between 2004 and 2017, profoundly transformed our understanding of its rings, its atmosphere, and its numerous moons.

Obverse

The obverse features a representation of Saturn in the center, with the planet in golden tones and its characteristic ring system extending diagonally across the composition. The background depicts a starry sky in black and silver, while in the upper right, several arcs visually extend the structure of the rings.

Around the scene is a blue band, traversed by wavy yellow lines and small dots and stars. Above the planet is the inscription "SATURNUS," the Latin name for Saturn, while to the right appears its astronomical symbol. The face value "25 EURO" completes the design at the bottom.

Reverse

The reverse features the new effigy of Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg, depicted in profile facing left. Below the image are the year of issue, “2026,” and the name of the issuing country, “LËTZEBUERG.” Also visible are the initials “AH” of Helmut Andexlinger, engraver for the Austrian Mint and author of the portrait for Luxembourg collector coins issued from 2026 onward.
